Cadence continues to amaze me for her kind, gentle, intuitive ways and her intense desire to work with me. She’s the smallest pup which makes her an easy keeper. I love her enthusiasm and her smile!
Sit – The Most Basic Command
The “Sit” that I teach to puppies isn’t even close to the actual behavior we expect of an adult dog. Our standard for “Sit” implies that the dog also stays in that position, without any additional command, until instructed otherwise. But, since adult dogs in a social “pack” don’t expect puppies under 4-6 months to “absolutely comply” I don’t either. Still, this training sets the tone for a pup that the person wants to interact and offer the puppy a chance to be valuable to the family.
Shake Paw – an exercise that if not only a fun parlor trick. The behavior of presenting a paw can be morphed into a number of useful tasks.
“Follow” – an early introduction to taking direction from the handler.
“Down” is an important exercise for any dog to learn. Like “Sit” asking a dog to “Down” without expecting it to also “stay” is somewhat useless. But, introducing any position behavior to puppies is a good start to developing their enthusiasm to learn and cooperate. Here’s my very first attempt to lure Cadence into the down, which I did atop the grooming table because getting down on the ground with puppies is a mobility challenge for me.
